Little Subwoofer Packs Big Punch
“I think I can! I think I can!” said this less than a single square foot low frequency monster.
The Definitive Technology Supercube 2000 is an impressive little beast.I had the opportunity to spend some time with a couple of these in my theatre recently, and I am blown away. Explosive…check! Musical…check! Cost-effective…check!!! The challenge with subwoofers is always trying to find ways to hide them while still getting performance. This sub is so small, you don’t need to hide it; approximately a 10-1/2” cube and it is adorable and modern; finished off beautifully with piano black high-gloss top and bottom.
Everyone loves feeling their music and their movies. It is always enjoyable…as long as the bass blends well, is clean, punchy, tight and accurate. Live instruments and live performances usually feature great instruments and great sound. It is the energy and the frequencies of the music that gets us fired up as human beings and if you have not had a good experience with subwoofers in the past, you need to give this a try. The Supercube 2000 is a perfect companion for in-wall, in-ceiling, on-wall or bookshelf speakers, and is super easy to set up.
Subwoofer placement matters though. The low frequencies generally blend better with your main speakers if the subwoofer is placed within the front one-third of your room.Don’t place the subwoofer too close to your seating area as you want to hear and feel the sound and you don’t want to be able to feel its location. The goal is for seamless blending of the impact and bass. Also, avoid putting the subwoofers in the corner; this will usually give you more output, but at a cost of the bass being boomy and annoying.Pick a crossover setting like 80 Hz and this will ensure that you are not reinforcing deep male voices, just lower frequencies like bass guitar, gun shots and jets flying through your living room!
If you want to play around with your subwoofer placement and try to optimize the bass quality another notch or two, get a long enough subwoofer cable to place the subwoofer in your main listening chair.Turn on your favourite tune that has a great bass line and put a segment on repeat and walk around the room to the various locations that the subwoofer could sit. Wherever the bass sounds the best is your ideal choice.
